I played soccer for UNC-A 53 years ago, when it was just an NAIA team. I played for the man who the maintenance plant is named for. I love soccer.
But putting a 5,000 seat stadium that is not only for the UNC-A teams but also for the Asheville City Soccer club, a USL2 team, in the 45 acre urban forest that is the last remaining forest in the city limits, is not only a misguided use of funds (when the school is strapped for cash) but will also displace a lot of wildlife.
Plus it is an oasis for city dwellers for hiking and forest bathing.
And more will be built there, including student housing with accompanying parking lots, to the point there won’t be much forest left.
And this at a school that prides itself on its environmental programs and focus.
In The Beast in the Garden, David Baron takes a look at suburban sprawl pushing people and wild animals into uncomfortable, sometimes deadly proximity.
Great drawing and creative news, David!!
